Aim Bar — User Guide

The Aim Bar gives you a true, reliable straight line to work against. Because your eyes and posture shape how you see a straight line, and that is different for everyone, the bar lets you see how your own perception compares to reality, then train your setup and start line around it.

Setting up the Aim Bar with a Stance Mirror

  1. Place your mirror from the Stance Mirror Series flat on the putting surface, pointing at your target.
  2. Slot the Aim Bar into the mirror so it aligns straight along the target line.
  3. Take your normal putting stance over the mirror and settle into your address position.
  4. Check that the bar looks straight to you. This can be used as a reference for your ideal setup position, the one that best helps you see straight.

Using the Aim Bar on its own

  1. Set the Aim Bar down on the green or indoor surface, pointing directly at your target.
  2. Place a ball at one end of the bar.
  3. Take your setup so the bar looks straight and in line with your target.
  4. Check that the bar looks straight to you. This can be used as a reference for your ideal setup position.

Three ways to practise

Perception check

Settle into your setup and posture and look along the Aim Bar toward the target. Notice whether the line looks perfectly straight, or looks slightly left or right of your target. If the Aim Bar does not look straight, this tells you that you have a visual bias, which could cause you to aim the putter face poorly.

Where you position your head has a big effect on how you see a straight line. Several things come into play: how far you stand from the ball, how much you bend your neck, how much you tilt your neck, and how much your head is rotated. Small changes in any of these can make the Aim Bar look straight to one golfer and slightly off to another, which is exactly why it is worth checking your own perception.

Face alignment

Set up to a ball at the end of the bar and match your putter face to the line. It is worth knowing that a face which feels square often is not, so use the Aim Bar as your reference rather than your feel. Check whether the face sits square, or slightly open or closed, and keep adjusting your setup until square starts to look and feel normal.

Start line feedback

Hit short putts along the bar and watch how the ball comes off the bar. If it rolls straight down the line of the bar, your face and path are matching your aim. If it drifts either way, you have instant feedback that something in your setup or stroke needs adjusting.

Tips

  • Start with short putts and only increase the putt length once your start line is consistent.
  • Trust the Aim Bar, not your feel. If the line looks right or left of your intended target but the bar is straight, that is your perceptual bias and not the tool.
  • A few focused minutes each session beats long practice without purpose.
  • Keep it in your bag and use it as a quick alignment check before a round.
